43 Foreign runners set for Uganda National athletics trials

A total of 43 runners from seven countries are set to compete in the 4th Uganda National Athletics Trials scheduled for Saturday, 25 April 2026, at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The athletes, competing in the U20 category, are aiming to qualify for the World Athletics U20 Championships set to take place from 4th–9th August 2026 in Eugene, USA.

The international entries include 20 athletes from the Athlete Refugee Team (ART), 12 from South Sudan, 5 from Kenya, 2 from Sweden, 2 from Ethiopia, and one athlete each from Burundi and Rwanda.

On the local front, Ugandan athletes in the same category will have only four remaining opportunities to achieve the qualifying standards. These include the 4th Trials (25 April), Central Region Championships (16 May), Akii-Bua Memorial Meet (6 June), and the National Championships (25–27 June 2026), which will mark the close of the local qualification window.

In addition to the U20 competitions, Saturday’s trials will also feature senior athletes aiming to qualify for the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships scheduled for 12th–17th May 2026 in Accra, Ghana.
