World Athletics (WA) lists Cheptegei and Cherop world road title contenders
Uganda’s multiple Olympic and world gold medalist Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei and Charity Cherop who claimed 5000m gold and 3000m bronze at the 2026 World U20 Championships are listed among the top title contenders in the half marathon and 5km respectively.
The two are among a strong Uganda team of 16 athletes flagged off today in Kampala. They will be heading to Denmark later in the evening for the World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26 due on 19-20 September, 2026.
The high team entry showcases the strength and appeal Uganda attaches to the global road running championships going by the past stellar performances
The Championships has attracted total of 496 elite athletes from 85 countries who include 226 women and 270 men contesting for individual and world’s best team titles for grabs in 1mile, 5km and half marathon (21km) races. While the mass races have attracted approximately 65,000 participants.
The team includes: Women (21km) – Esther Chebet, Esther Chekwemoi Yeko, Annet Chemengich Chelangat and Rebecca Chelangat.
Men (21km) – Joshua Cheptegei, Mande Bushendich, Martin Kiprotich and Feb Chelogoi
Women 5km – Charity Cherop and Martha Chemutai
Men 5km – Alex Kiplangat and Kenneth Kiprop
Women 1mile – Felister Chekwemoi and Patience Cherop.
Men 1 mile – Silas Chemutai and Hosea Kiprop.
Apollo Musherure leads the team accompanied by coaches, Grace Chesang and Alex Malinga
