Uganda brushes shoulders with world best
Uganda is set to compete in one of the world’s most electrifying events, the World Relays Championship, scheduled for May 2–3, 2026, in Gaborone, Botswana.
The finest Ugandan quartet ready to battle in the mixed relay includes Shida Leni, Banura Maureen, Adoli Haron, and Omuka Kenneth. The team will be under the guidance of Coach Moses Asonya.
The task ahead for Uganda in Gaborone is threefold: qualifying for the prestigious Ultimate Championship, securing a spot at the 2027 Beijing World Championships, and setting a new national record.
Athletics pundits have rated this year’s World Relays highly, anticipating a thrilling speed showdown filled with dramatic baton exchanges and flawless handovers, all in the quest for qualification to the Beijing Championships next year.
On the expected world-stage drama, Uganda will rub shoulders with some of the world’s top sprinters, including 2023 World Champion Antonio Watson of Jamaica, World 400m Champion Collen Kebinatshipi, World 4x400m Champions Bayapo Ndori and Leungo Scotch of Botswana, and World and Olympic Relay Champion Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands, among others.
Setting a new national record for Uganda in Gaborone is not far-fetched. It is almost the same team that set a new national record of 3:15.26 at the World Athletics Relays last year in Guangzhou, China, with the only change being the replacement of Godfrey Chanwengo by Omuka Kenneth
