Uganda names team for Africa championships

The Uganda Athletics (UA) has named a national team of 18 athletes and four officials for the 24th edition of the African Senior Athletics Championships.The championships is due May 12-17, 2026, in Accra, Ghana.

The team comprises eight women: Shida Leni (400m/ mixed relay), Banura Maureen (400m/mixed relay), Monica Akullu (200m/400m/Mixed relay), Chebet Maureen (800m), Knight Aciru (800m/1500m), Chemutai Martha (5,000m/10,000m),  Chepkwirui Nancy (3000mSC), Chelangat Rebecca (10,000m)

The men include:  Aboda Emmanual (100m/200m),  Adoli Haron (400m/mixed relay), Omuka Kenneth (400m/Mixed relay),  Chan Wengo Geofrey ( 400m/mixed relay), Dradiga Tom (800m/1500m), Kibet Dan (5000m/10,000m),  Chelimo Dolphine (5,000m/10,000), Cherop Samuel Simba (5,000m/10,000m), Chemutai Leonard (3000mSC), Otim David Beckham (Long jump).

The officials are Demayi Francis (Head Coach), Sarah behind the Nambawa (Coach), Pius Ocilaje (Coach) and Ssali Denis (Physiotherapist).

The President of Uganda Athletics Domenic Otucet urged all Ugandans to pray and rally behind the excellent performance in Accra, Ghana.

Uganda has historically exhibited strong competitiveness at the African Senior Athletics Championships, particularly in long-distance running, with athletes like Joy Cheptoyek, Sarah Chelangat, Racheal Zena, Moses Ndiema Kipsiro and others winning medals against a strong Kenyan and Ethiopian opposition or posting top-tier performances in recent editions. The country has also often featured in the top 10 positions in the continental rankings.

The country last won 2 gold medals in steeplechase alone by Leonard Chemutai and Loyce Chekwemoi plus three bronze medals in Tom Dradiga (800m), Josephine Lalam (javelin) and Esther Chebet (1500m) at the 2024 edition in Douala, Cameroon.
